South Africa: ICRC remembers Ahmed Kathrada

ENG

Pretoria (ICRC) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is deeply saddened by the untimely death of Ahmed Kathrada early on Tuesday, 28 March. Our sincere condolences to his family and the people of South Africa.

Beginning in 1963, the ICRC visited Mr Kathrada and other Rivonia trialists detained at Robben Island to monitor their treatment and conditions of detention. It is through these visits that the ICRC and its staff forged a lifelong friendship with Mr Kathrada.

ICRC President Peter Maurer met Mr Kathadra during his recent visit to South Africa in October 2016 where they exchanged views on the impact of the ICRC's visits as well as our shared values and commitment to the protection of dignity. Mr Kathrada's legacy of reconciliation, forgiveness and a belief in the human spirt will continue to inspire us.
